Behind The Brand – Suunto Watches

Founded in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen in Finland, Suunto was born out of a love for the outdoors. Tuomas was a championship orienteer who created the brand after being disappointed by the inaccuracy of other compasses. In 1933, he applied for a patent for the method of filling and sealing a lightweight compass housing, made from celluloid filled with liquid which would dampen the needle and protect it from shock and wear. The patent was granted in 1935 and his liquid filled compasses provided much more accuracy and improved readings for fellow orienteerers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Suunto Through History

• In 1939, a Finnish lieutenant was saved by a Suunto compass after he was shot by a sniper and the compass he was carrying took the bullet, thus proving just how robust the Suunto compasses were.

• During world war two, Suunto created the sighting compass for artillery officers who needed an instrument for measuring coordinates. After the war, the company's compasses grew in popularity and Suunto became a well known name.

• In 1965, a British diver wore a Suunto compass on his wrist and discovered that the device works under water too, after this, the Suunto diving range was launched and in 1987 the brand's five computer is produced, offering divers a revolutionary way to calculate timings.
• In 1998, the brand designs its first outdoor wrist top computer, the Vector, which featured an altimeter, barometer and a compass, also known as the ABC function. It is one of the brand's most successful products and many mountaineers choose the Suunto Vector as an essential piece of equipment.

Today, the company produces a vast selection of sports watches, dive computers and compasses. Still based in Finland, Suunto strives to maintain its reputation as one of the world's most popular outdoor watch brands, offering an innovative range of models each year, all of which are handcrafted and designed with pride and precision.
